WSS ’10 Round 3 : Valencia

Triumph scored its best ever world supersport results in Valencia, Spain, this weekend, with Daytona 675 riders finishing third, fourth and seventh in a hard fought third round of the championship.

Briton Chaz Davies scored his first ever world championship podium after finishing third. Following a great start, the 23-year-old battled for the lead with local rider Joan Lascorz and former world champion Kenan Sofuoglu. With Lascorz inspired at his home race, Davies and Sofuoglu matched each other blow for blow in the battle for second, which was only decided in the Turk’s favour when the Triumph man made a small mistake three laps from the end.

Behind this battle, Davies’ Triumph ParkinGO BE1 team-mate David Salom was charging through the field and eventually overtook polesitter and championship favourite Eugene Laverty for fourth with a few laps remaining. The Spaniard had been fast all weekend but was handicapped after being caught up in a first lap melee. Unperturbed, the Spaniard got his head down to record lap times every bit as fast as the leader to be rewarded by fourth place. As a result, Davies now sits fourth in the series with Salom a point behind in fifth.

There was good news too for new signing Matthieu Lagrive, despite being relegated to seventh on the last corner. The Frenchman was able to get his first full race distance on the Daytona 675, which will stand him in good stead for the remainder of the season. Triumph’s fourth entry, American Jason DiSalvo, had a difficult day after sliding off after a few laps.

While the result was very positive, it was the team’s competitiveness which really buoyed the team and riders in Spain. Davies and Salom were a full second and a half quicker than the team’s 2009 best time in practice and the bikes were able to match the competition throughout the race at one of the team’s weaker circuits.

The championship now moves to the Dutch circuit of Assen in two weeks time, where there is sure to be a big crowd to see what the Daytona 675s can do at this fast and flowing circuit.
